Bitmovin releases new V3 Mobile Software Development Kits for seamless mobile viewing experiences

San Francisco, CA – May 19, 2022Bitmovin, a leading provider of video streaming infrastructure, announces the latest release of its Mobile Player Software Development Kits (SDKs) for the Bitmovin Player. The Mobile Player SDKs empower video developers to easily enhance viewing experiences on iOS & Android devices for audiences worldwide. The release also includes a major new feature – the Playlist API, which provides gapless playback between separate clips for a seamless viewer experience.

“We have completely revamped our Mobile Player SDKs’ architecture with new features and improvements – all of which will help our customers get to market faster,” said Stefan Lederer, CEO and Co-Founder of Bitmovin. “Our focus with this release is to improve the developer experience with simple and easy-to-use tools that can integrate into existing video workflows with significantly less code. As a result, our customers will be able to make their services more mobile-friendly and provide their audiences with the superior viewing experiences they expect and deserve.

Today’s video players need to offer support for as many devices as possible to provide audiences with a compelling viewing experience. Streaming services need to be able to attract and retain viewers by optimizing the viewing experience on mobile devices. Furthermore, new market entrants across verticals such as e-learning and health and fitness need developer-friendly, easy to use tools that ensure video playback quality so developer teams can focus on tailoring their user experience. The latest iteration of Bitmovin’s Mobile Player SDKs meets this industry need with a brand new architecture and enhanced developer resources – reducing time to market and increasing the quality of experience within Android and iOS mobile native apps. The Mobile Player SDKs achieve this by playing back multiple sources sequentially, incurring significantly lower load times for mobile viewers.

Key features of the new Mobile Player Software Development Kits include:

  • New Playlist API providing gapless playback between streams
  • Fine-grained control over individual streams in a playlist
  • Comprehensive offline playback functionality, including for encrypted & tokenized streams
  • Absolute timestamps for live streams & synchronized user experience
  • Intuitive Kotlin-first Android API design
  • Swift Package Manager support for iOS and tvOS
  • API workflow improvements like enhanced error handling & improved API documentation

A key feature of the Mobile Player SDKs is the “Playlist API” that allows sources to be prepared more dynamically without creating an entirely new playback session every time a stream switch is required. This is further enhanced with automatic playlist buffering (before Player playback) to ensure a smoother overall experience. Developers can now also reference APIs that connect seamlessly into a streaming service’s internal workflows or an SDK implementation with the new updates.

The latest Mobile Player SDKs are available with a Kotlin-first design for Android and with newly added support for Swift Package Manager on iOS, to ensure fast and easy integrations for developers. Compared to previous versions, the new SDKs also significantly reduce the number of steps required to integrate Bitmovin’s Player into native mobile apps.
