The focus of this lesson is one of the most commonly used video codecs - the advanced video codec (AVC), the history behind video coding standards and leads into the encoding algorithm behind AVC, frame intra prediction and entropy coding.

This lesson will cover the Advanced Video Codec (AVC), the most commonly used video codec on the internet. The lesson will cover a comparative history of video codecs and their performances. This is followed by a deep dive into AVC, also known as H264,  covering the codecs’ intra frames prediction mechanisms, quantization and DCT components. Lastly you’ll learn about the splitting of a frames into different macroblocks and how these can be efficiently encoded to preserve quality via deblocking and entropy coding.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a compression algorithm that encodes digital video with the aim of maximizing quality while minimizing file size. This lesson outlines the history of video codec standards, specifically HEVC and transitions into the current trends of online video distribution. From the technical perspective,Professor Timmerer provides an in-depth explanation of the HEVC block diagram and its video encoding algorithm. The process starts with splitting an image in Coding Tree Units (CTUs) or independent regions of pixel blocks, applying intra and inter frame prediction(s), and calculating the GOP structure (along with other aspects of video encoding). Lastly, the performance capabilities of HEVC and AVC are analysed and compared.

It will talk about the different video formats supported by MPEG-1, their use cases and touch on the differences between MPEG-1 and H:261. Also it will cover motion compensation for MPEG-1 and the transition of objects between different frames. Also showing in more details the sizes of frames in MPEG-1 and then giving a breakdown and explanation of the video bitstream - GOPs etc - structure of this standard.

This lesson will cover the video formats supported by H.261. We’ll then get into frame sequencing and Intra-frame (I-frame) and Inter-frame (P-frame) coding which describe how frames in a video are compressed and encoded to reduce the file size and maximize perceived quality by the user. Then we’ll cover Predictive Coding, where a motion vector estimates the amount of changing pixels in successive macroblocks which make up a video frame. We will also cover quantization in H.261, which averages out small differences in adjacent and successive blocks arranged together in Group of Block (GOB) Structures. Then we’ll provide some insight into what bitrate is in video.

In this lesson we’ll talk about lossy compression algorithms, and how it yields a much higher compression ratio than lossless compression with the goal of maximizing the compression ratio and minimizing distortion.

In this lesson we’ll talk about lossy compression algorithms, and how it yields a much higher compression ratio than lossless compression with the goal of maximizing the compression ratio and minimizing distortion. Lossy compression algorithms make use of different distortion measures such as the Mean Square Error or the Peak-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (PSNR) to describe the quality of the video signal. These measures provide a coarse reference to the perceived quality by the user. Compressing a video this way involves multiple steps to reduce the amount of transmitted data while maximizing the fidelity to the original signal.

We will go through an example of how each of these algorithms work by looking at a simple example of encoding and decoding with the word ‘HELLO’.
